A Call to all Unionized Workers in the Postal Sector, Logistics and Communications Internationally.
The Postal Services Workers Union/Palestine, representing all employees in the postal sector in occupied Palestine, affirm that the Universal Postal Union has recognized the rights of Palestine and granted us the postal code required to carry out our services, as well as settling accounts with the countries of the world since 2009.
However, some states have refused to deal with Palestine and preferred to maintain the status quo, which is using the State of the Israel, the occupying power, to process mail going to the Palestinian Occupied Territories (OPT). We note that this process has meant the theft of Palestinian funds being transferred; the destruction of many of the items meant to reach the OPT; serious violations of the privacy of correspondence; continuous mail disruptions due to so-called security screenings; and arbitrary delays in mail delivery by Israel’s occupation authorities.
We assert that the Palestinian people have a right to exchange mail freely and receive all financial rights and entitlements estimated at more than 200 thousand dollars per month. What Israeli is doing is in clear violation of article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states that “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation, and everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks”.
Therefore we, workers in the postal sector in the State of Palestine, address this appeal to people of conscience around the world to push governments and corporations to officially deal with the Palestinian postal services and use the Palestinian postal code. We ask you to put pressure on those postal services and governments in your country in order to deal with Palestine as an entity that has the right to freedom and equality.
We call on all postal services unions around the world to stand in solidarity with Palestinian postal services workers by taking gradual measures against mail to and from Israel until Israel, the occupying power, stops all its human rights violations against Palestinian postal services and postal workers.
This issue concerns the entirety of the Palestinian people. Do not hesitate to urge your governments, postal service providers (private or state owned) to deal with the Palestinian Zip code and send messages and mail directly to the Palestinian people without resorting to dealing with the occupying power, especially after the international recognition of the state of Palestine by the United Nations.
