The United Northern Janitors is a group of opposition to the current administration of USWW. For that reason, we are announcing our participation in union elections in September. We are ready to join with any worker or group of workers within the union movement who publicly upholds the following principles:
1 – Independence from the bosses and the current employer-friendly union administration, 2 – Defense of union democracy, 3 – Permanent mobilization of members to achieve our demands, 4 – Class solidarity, and 5 – Protection of working women
In upcoming union elections, we propose to support candidates who advocate these five principles. We believe that the struggle of the above principles are guaranteed to defend the interests of workers. We raise these principles in opposition to Mike Garcia and the current union administration.
Explanation of the principles
1. Union Independence. Our union must be completely independent of employers and must not allow closed-door negotiations with the companies. The negotiations should be open to the membership.
2. Union Democracy. Decisions within the union must be taken by all workers in their assemblies and meetings and not by impositions by the bureaucratic & despotic trade union leaders like the current ones.
3. Mobilization. Mobilization of members against employers should be ongoing in order to achieve our demands. The current union administration has given away all of our rights because it doesn’t mobilize its workers . They want to satisfy employers at the expense of the poverty and humiliation of the workers. That is why we have lost sick days, vacation, etc. Our salaries are on the ground, while the copay insurance, if we have not already lost it, is too expensive.
4. Solidarity.To strengthen our fight, our union must be an example of solidarity and unity.Mike G. and his clique are interested only in extracting the immense privileges from membership dues. We are against such practices. The union must be the instrument of struggle and support for our class brothers. This is the only path for working class unity. We are united with security workers in their fight for a fair contract and better benefits
5. Defense of working women: We fight against the oppression of women workers by the companies and against any oppression or sexism against women. In our union, the leadership should be composed mainly of women workers since they are the majority of the members.
In the next election we will put forward fighting candidates from the opposition caucus United Northern Janitors (UNJ).
