Workers at GM plant in Brazil go on strike

The autoworkers of General Motors went on strike Friday morning, against the plans of the company to dismiss 794 workers of Sao Jose dos Campos plant in Brazil. Soon after the assembly, the workers entered into the factory where they remain stopped.

At a meeting held yesterday between the Metalworkers Trade Union of São José dos Campos and General Motors, the company proposed the lay off of 794 workers for two months. After that, all those workers would be fired.

Currently, the Sao José dos Campos plant has about 5,200 workers and produces 300 vehicles per day, among S10 pickup trucks and Chevrolet Trailblazer models.

“The strike is the only way we can stop mass dismissals from taking place at GM in São José dos Campos. Now, we will only return to work when our demands are accepted”, says the union president Antonio Ferreira de Barros.

Workers cannot pay for a crisis created by the capitalists!
