Solidarity with Hugo Blanco, Historic Latin American Peasant Leader

Hugo Blanco, a historic Peruvian peasant leader has been hospitalized in Sweden, where he went to live with his daughters. He is 88 years old and needs a very expensive surgery, for which his relatives are appealing to the solidarity of the international community.

Since Hugo does not have legal residence nor can he have access to the social security rights of that country, a financial aid campaign is essential to cover the high costs of the operation and all the necessary medical attention.

Hugo Blanco is a historical reference of the peasant and indigenous struggle for land. He has dedicated his whole life to the defense of the rights of exploited sectors, against extractivism and environmental depredation. He was active in Argentina, Peru, Chile, Mexico, and several European countries.  Between the 1950s and 1960s, he was part of the Morenoist current, assuming the revolutionary Trotskyist program with impressive dedication and determination. He spent many years in prison and was even sentenced to death. It took an intense and broad international campaign to transform his sentence to capital punishment into a 25-year prison sentence, from which he was later granted amnesty. Between 1978 and 1980, he was elected and served as a constituent deputy, demonstrating a principled attitude in that parliamentary task.

From the LIT-CI, we express our solidarity with Hugo Blanco and his relatives. We make ourselves available to contribute to this campaign. We share a link through which you can make financial contributions. We call on our militancy, sympathizers, friends, and all the social, peasant, worker, student, and popular movements of Latin America and the world, to join the solidarity campaign with Hugo Blanco.
