List of solidarity statements in support of Zé Maria
Introduction
José Maria de Almeida, Zé Maria, national president of the Unified Socialist Workers’ Party (PSTU), was sentenced to two years house arrest by the Federal Court in a case brought by the Israeli Confederation of Brazil together with the Israeli Federation of the State of São Paulo (case no. 5004694-46.2024.4.03.6181), under accusation of racism against the Jewish people (antisemitism).
This is a political and unjust conviction. Zé Maria is not an antisemite. His public work is based on criticism of Zionism and the policies of the State of Israel, especially the genocide of the Palestinian people. Throughout his career, he has positioned himself in defense of a free, secular, democratic, and non-racist Palestine, where different peoples can coexist with equal rights.
The sentence sets a dangerous precedent in the country by targeting political positions and criticism of states. We also note the advancement of legislative initiatives, such as Bill No. 1424/2026, authored by Congresswoman Tabata Amaral (PSB), which proposes equating antisemitism with the crime of racism and imposing penalties of imprisonment and fines.
Given this context, an international solidarity campaign for Zé Maria is underway. Political organizations, trade unions, social movements, and activists from various countries are joining the initiative through petitions, motions, public statements, and other actions, aiming to pressure the Brazilian judiciary and demand his acquittal.
This dossier presents the main elements of this campaign, gathering information, positions, and initiatives that express a solidarity network that transcends national borders. More than the defense of a political leader, this is a struggle for freedom of expression, the right to criticism, and international solidarity among peoples.
