The mobilization in Iran is unprecedented in its sweep and scale, far larger than the protests we have seen in the recent past. As such, this uprising represents perhaps the greatest threat to the power of the rule of the Mullahs, a power that has been ruling Iran almost unchecked for most of the last fifty years.

Since January 8, the Iranian regime has blocked internet and telephone communications and carried out massacres against protesters across the country. Human rights organizations estimate that there have been between 3,400 and 20,000 deaths, thousands of injuries, and more than 20,000 detentions of protesters. The student movement, with a transformative imagination, seeks a future free from tyranny and will not submit to any form of authoritarianism. Today, our progress requires a new plan in hand. The crises of society and the incompetence of all opposing sides to the Islamic Republic have brought us to a point where we claim the student movement needs affirmative activism. That is, it must respond to the demands of the time, stand alongside the people and various social groups in their calls for justice, and formulate the processes through which these demands can be achieved.
