The death of Al Zarqawi

The death of Al Zarqawi

Not having much good news from Iraq and Afghanistan, Bush and his ally, Tony Blair set out to celebrate the death of Abu Musab Al Zaeqawi. In their declarations they stated that this fact meant a signal that they were beginning to retake the control of the country and that this was to e the point of inflexion in the struggle against the resistance to the occupation.

We do not think this to be the most probable prospect. Al Zarkawi was the leader of a Sunni armed group linked to Al Qaeda, Bind Laden?s international trend and he always occupied a lot of space in the international press. Many of his actions were against the Shii population (such as raids on mosques or religious festivities). Actually, these actions helped the policy of ?religious civil war? promoted by imperialism. That is why IWL-FI has often criticised and condemned it. And yet, in spite of the importance attributed to his figure, the Al Zarqawi has never reached an outstanding in the resistance or in the activities against the puppet government and the occupation. To the contrary, important sectors of the resistance have often condemned actions that have been attributed to this group.

In all likelihood, therefore, the declarations of the American and British governments are based more on either the need to have ?something to write home about? or on wishful thinking than on actual Iraqi situation.
