They have been actively supporting the uprising against president Daniel Ortega since April 19, 2018.
According to peasant leader Freddy Navas they are under attack for demanding justice and standing for freedom for all Nicaraguans.
During one session of the “Mesa de Dialogo Nacional” (Table for National Dialogue), Medardo Mairena said to president Ortega:
“We are the people that are in the streets but have never been heard. The people want you to leave Office. We do not want any more deaths for which you are responsible”.
