Peasant leaders Medardo Mairena and Pedro Mena have been in jail in Nicaragua on charges of murder and terrorism since July 13, 2018.

They have led the struggle against the law which allows the Chinese company which won the concession to build the future canal to link the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, to expropriate their lands.
They have been actively supporting the uprising against president Daniel Ortega since April 19, 2018.
According to peasant leader Freddy Navas they are under attack for demanding justice and standing for freedom for all Nicaraguans.
During one session of the “Mesa de Dialogo Nacional” (Table for National Dialogue), Medardo Mairena said to president Ortega:
“We are the people that are in the streets but have never been heard. The people want you to leave Office. We do not want any more deaths for which you are responsible”.
Nearly 500 hundred people have been killed by Sandinist paramilitary since April.
