He was the 1910 Mexican Revolution main people’s leader.
The Revolution toppled dictator Porfirio Diaz and opened the way to the land reform and the nationalization of the clerical properties.
Zapata led the peasantry and indigenous peoples in Morelos State to fight for Land and Freedom.
Morelos was a center for sugar-cane plantation which suppressed people’s communal lands.
These communal lands – called “ejidos” – were finally recognized in the Mexican constitution under Lazaro Cardenas nationalist administration many years later.
The “ejidos” were kept until NAFTA (North America Free Trade Agreement) was signed between America, Canada and Mexico.
Then the constitution was changed, allowing the “ejidos” to be privatized.
A hundred years after Zapata’s assassination, his struggle for land and freedom is a need for our days!
