Video: Demonstrations Against Bus Fare Cross the Country

See in the video below the demonstrations that crossed the country on Monday, June 17, in at least 12 Brazilian capitals: São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Porto Alegre (RS), Belo Horizonte (MG), Brasília (DF), Belém (PA), Maceió (AL), Salvador (BA), Curitiba (PR), Vitória (ES), Fortaleza (CE) and Recife (PE).

According to news agencies, at least 250,000 protesters took to the streets on this day.

In Belo Horizonte, tens of thousands of people marched toward the “Mineirão”, the Arena where occurred the football (soccer) game Nigeria x Tahiti, as part of the Confederations Cup. Next to the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the police blocked the march and began the crackdown on protesters to prevent their arrival at the Arena. Tear gas and rubber bullets were launched. Two protesters who were surrounded by Shock troops fell from an overpass and are in serious condition at the City Hospital.

In São Paulo, the news agency Datafolha stated that the protest reached 65 thousand participants. The outbreak spread across the city and the Paulista Avenue and Marginal Pinheiros were closed by protesters throughout the night.

Protesters marched down Rio Branco Avenue and headed to the Municipal Theater, in downtown, where they occupied the steps of the National Library and the City Council. From there, they went to the State Legislature (Alerj), when they were blocked by the police.

In Brasilia, the protest began at 17h. Protesters gathered in front of the Republic Museum and from there marched to the National Congress, at the Ministries Space. Protesters occupied the ramp and the roof of the National Congress in Brasilia. The protest gathered around 10,000 protesters.

In Porto Alegre, the protest gathered around 20,000. In Curitiba and Belém, the demonstration came to join 15,000 people. In Salvador, the military police stated that 10,000 protesters were marching. In the capital of Alagoas, about 3000 demonstrators protested in the streets of the city. In Recife, what was to be an organizational meeting turned into a march. The protesters said that the mobilization was just a rehearsal for the big event which will occur in Recife on 06/20. Thursday, June 20, will be a national day of demonstrations.
