March to Brasilia is crucial to defending workers’ rights

Activists seek to defend workers rights and demand changes in the economic policy of Dilma’s government

Boosted by CSP-Conlutas(1) and numerous other national entities as well as unions of several categories, the National March to Brasilia on April 24th is of great significance and has become a hub for organizing those willing to defend the workers’ rights  from the ongoing threat of government and employers.

With activists coming from all over the country, the manifestation has a central axis: to demand an economic policy for the benefit of the working class and against the attacks on the its rights.

The group of entities that organizes the demonstration stands up against the Special Collective Agreement (ACE), a proposal that permits the free negotiation of labor rights between unions and companies, paving the way for the withdrawal of historical achievements envisaged in CLT (Consolidation of Labor Laws).

Furthermore, workers demand that President Dilma take immediate measures in favor of the working class, such as the prohibition of dismissal without cause and the reduction of weekly work journey to 40 hours with no pay cuts.

«In this manifestation, we are going to take to the President all the workers’ claims, they want jobs, expansion of rights and reduction of working journey. We want, in short, an economic policy in favor of workers”, says the president of the Metalworkers Union of São José dos Campos and Region, Antonio Ferreira de Barros, Macapá.

Other demands of the March are: for the end of Social Security Factor, a mechanism that reduces the retirement monthly value of the pensions of private sector workers at the time of granting the benefit, and for the cancellation of the Social Security Reform bought with the «Mensalão» according to what Brazilian Justice has decided in relation to the greatest scandal of Lula government.

 The March demands:

 – Against the ACE (Special Collective Agreement) which threatens to wipe out historical rights, such as FGTS(2), vacation, 13th salary, among others!

– The end of the Social Security Factor which reduces by 40% the value of pensions, without Factor 85/95(3) or Factor 95/105(4)!

 – Cancellation of the Social Security Reform voted in 2003 and bought with the «Mensalão» money!

 – Immediate adoption of Convention 158 of ILO, which prohibits layoffs without cause!

 – Reduction of working hours without pay cut. To work less so that everyone works!

 – In defense of the right to decent housing!

 – Out with Pastor Marco Feliciano from the Commission of Human Rights’ Presidency!

 – In defense of public education and public healthcare!

 – Against the criminalization of the struggles and of the social movements.

 – Against the privatizations. For the defense of Brazil’s patrimony and natural resources!

 – Suspension of payment of the external and internal debt to the great speculators!
