The regime is making society pay the price for the deepening structural crisis while attempting to align all forces around itself.

As the regime attempts to reinvent itself, it is drawing a new line of sociopolitical alignment. We define regional tensions and hot conflicts precisely along the axis of this imperialist struggle for division and repartition; a fierce battle is underway over energy corridors, supply routes, critical minerals and markets.

The Bonapartist regime in Turkiye, with power concentrated in the Palace, is also taking shape according to this conjuncture. We cannot read the government’s growing aggressiveness independently of the negotiations between the expansionist ambitions of Turkish capital and the strategies of the imperialist camps. The situation is like two sides of the same coin: abroad, militarism and the pursuit of a share in plunder by aligning itself with zones of conflict; at home, an unrelenting policy of the stick against workers and the opposition in order to manage the crisis. The regime is making society pay the price for the deepening structural crisis while attempting to align all forces around itself.

Ukraine: Counteroffensives and Militarism in Europe

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is deepening into a war of attrition, moving further and further away from any basis for a diplomatic settlement. Politically cornered at home, the Zelensky administration is taking the war onto Russian territory through attacks reaching deep into Moscow with unmanned aerial vehicles, while Russia’s counteroffensives and the deployment of new-generation weapons technologies on the front are multiplying the destructiveness of the conflict. This situation has fundamentally shaken Europe’s security architecture.

Calls for “preparing for a Russian invasion” are rising one after another from European Union capitals, while the beating of the war drums is feeding a new wave of militarism in which social spending is cut and enormous budgets are channelled into the defence industry. As winter approaches and Russia keep the energy card on the table, EU governments are passing the bill on to the population, imposing austerity policies and “harsh winter” scenarios. In this climate of insecurity created by crisis and militarism, the institutional far right is gaining ground across the continent and steadily advancing.

Yemen and the Red Sea: The Palace’s New Quest for Adventure

Meanwhile, the conflicts along the Red Sea and Yemen corridor are paralysing global supply chains and maritime trade routes, while Turkiye’s ruling elites are also being drawn toward this zone of fire in pursuit of regional influence and markets. Every military maneuver in foreign policy becomes fuel for the “survival of the state” rhetoric and Bonapartist consolidation at home. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s statements indicating that Turkiye would take sides in attacks against Saudi Arabia openly reveal the policing role the government seeks to assume along this front.

Yet the Saudi regime is responsible for years of destruction and aggression in Yemen. The partnership established with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf monarchies against the Yemeni resistance standing with the Palestinian people essentially means shielding Zionism, imperialist interests and reactionary Gulf capital. Following the military agreements that have shaken the regional balance, the possibility that Turkish troops, just like Pakistani troops, could also be deployed to this geography lays bare how the Palace regime is dragging Turkiye’s workers and youth into a quagmire in pursuit of a share at the tables of imperialist division and repartition.

The Fault Line at Home: Fund Crisis, Bankruptcies and Trustees

However, this expansionist rhetoric and foreign adventures are not enough to conceal the naked realities of the economy. Capital flight triggered by tightening monetary policies on a global scale and the escalating atmosphere of war has pushed the regime into a deep funding crisis. Institutions forming the financial wing of the oligarchy and speculative fund companies are collapsing one after another. Millions of small savers trapped in Ponzi-like mechanisms without adequate backing or oversight are living with the profound anxiety of whether they will ever recover their savings.

Indeed, in more than 100 funds whose transactions on TEFAS were halted and whose liquidation was ordered by the Capital Markets Board (SPK), the savings of more than 500,000 investors have effectively been frozen. The approximately 809 billion lira ($17 billion) trapped in these funds, together with 485 billion Turkish Liras in equity positions held by the funds on Borsa Istanbul, is triggering a chain liquidity crisis. The fact that the total financial wreckage created by these positions, corresponding to approximately 9% of Borsa Istanbul’s free float, has reached $36 billion clearly documents the scale of the plunder.

The regime of the bosses, meanwhile, is once again displaying its habitual reflex: preparing to subsidise the costs of these plunder mechanisms and failed funds through public taxation. Indeed, the Palace is attempting to contain the damage caused by the financial crisis by increasing its macroeconomic interventions through the Medium-Term Programme (MTP). This regime cannot stop the machinery of the stock market and speculative funds, which have become an apparatus for dispossessing the population; for the very reason for the regime’s existence is precisely this brutal transfer of wealth. Only the power of the organised working class can abolish this system of exploitation and the parasites feeding off the backs of the people.

Meanwhile, as cheap external financing and opportunities for rolling over debt run out, the wave of concordats and bankruptcies in the real sector is intensifying. It is the working class, whose real wages are being eroded by inflation and who are condemned to insecurity and the threat of unemployment, that is paying the cost of capital sinking into a debt trap. As the resources of the Palace regime run dry, it opens forests and coastlines to plunder; it hands bridges, highways and public assets over to capital, mortgaging our future. The same MTP targets aim to condemn labour to an increasingly precarious, flexible and unorganised regime of work.

The government is resorting to a two-pronged consolidation in order to manage this economic collapse and the blockage of rent flows: on the one hand, by appointing trustees to municipalities and targeted companies, it is centralising the transfer of capital ownership and public resources to the Palace oligarchy; on the other, it is deploying the judiciary as an overt coercive apparatus of domination designed to completely paralyse the struggle of workers and the oppressed to defend their rights.

The Apparatus for Dividing Social Opposition: Culture Wars and LGBT+ Crackdowns

The machinery of repression is not confined to the direct political and trade-union spheres. The most effective way to prevent discussion of the war drums, runaway inflation, the deepening housing crisis and the collapse of the real sector is to manufacture artificial polarisation. The growing operational repression and wave of criminalisation targeting LGBT+ people and organisations in recent times is being deployed precisely at this point.

Carried out under the guise of “protecting the traditional family” and “standing against cultural imperialism,” these operations are, on the one hand, intended to consolidate the conservative base, exhausted by the crisis, around an artificially constructed enemy image; on the other, they seek to divide opposition blocs, trap them on the defensive and completely paralyse the space for civil society. The regime is attempting to use identity politics as a smoke screen to prevent class contradictions from becoming visible.

The Dead End of the Palace Regime

We are confronted with a Palace government seeking room for manoeuvre by aligning itself with regional tensions and adventures abroad, while attempting to remain in power at home through trusteeships, trade-union repression and witch-hunts based on identity. It is a Bonapartist regime whose sole concern is to prolong its rule by preserving the power and wealth accumulated in the hands of an increasingly narrow group.

This Bonapartist consolidation, which seeks to make workers, youth, women, oppressed identities and peoples pay the price of the global crisis, can neither halt the wave of bankruptcies and impoverishment at home nor eliminate the destructive risks created by the imperialist maelstrom. Although the level of repression rises as fragility increases, the regime’s fundamental weakness stems from its inability to produce a structural solution to any of these multiple crises.

As the regime attempts to reinvent itself, it is drawing a new line of sociopolitical alignment. In drawing this alignment, the regime no longer even needs to manufacture consent; it only demands social silence: “Nobody will make a sound!”

The voice that will shatter this silence will come from those whose access to politics is being restricted, those who are increasingly being pushed from citizens to subjects and from workers toward slavery. This silence can only be broken by grassroots assemblies in which those whose voices have been suppressed and those who have been unheard come together in their own name and for themselves, speak, and collectively build a line of struggle, rather than merely trying to make their voices heard by others.

This independent and organised line of struggle, built from below by the working class, the oppressed and the youth, is the only force capable of completely stripping away the veneer of this seemingly all-powerful regime.

First published here by Marksizm Şimdi!

Marxism Now!
