The crowd that greeted them highlighted the strength of the international mobilization and the relief felt, in Thiago’s words upon his arrival, at the “rectification of a violation.”

He made a point of stating that this is not about an individual and that no further examples are needed to demonstrate that Israel is a terrorist state—a glance at the ongoing Nakba is more than enough, a catastrophe whose cornerstone is the consolidation of this colonial and racist project in 1948, through ethnic cleansing and genocide that continue and intensify.

As usual, Thiago shifted the spotlight away from his own person and the attacks he suffered, emphasizing that this is not about him, but about the Palestinians, of whom more than 9,000 remain in Zionist dungeons—including 400 children—subjected to unspeakable torture—far, far beyond the grave violation against the two GSF coordinators and against the group of 181 activists violently abducted in international waters—yet another crime in the Zionist state’s extensive record.

In prison, Thiago reported hearing the screams of Palestinians, a political cost that Israel, as he also noted, is willing to pay, given the dehumanization of this people who exist because they resist. The political cost of keeping Thiago and Saif in dungeons for 100 years—as the genocidal state threatened them—would be too high, the Brazilian activist acknowledged while still at the airport, shortly after his arrival.

But what does all this reveal? First and foremost, the extent of the impunity perceived by Israel, in the face of historical international complicity. Israel has felt emboldened to pursue the “final solution” in the ongoing Nakba.

The green light came from governments around the world—beyond the direct participants in this crime, U.S. imperialism and the European powers. Most do not consider breaking ties with Israel and continue to sustain its industry of death with agreements, treaties, and pats on the back. Regrettably, this even includes the government of Thiago Ávila’s Brazil.

The face of impunity

The motto of the Global Sumud Flotilla speaks for itself: “When governments fail, we sail.” Were it not for such impunity, Israel would not feel comfortable continuing the genocide and expanding its grip, kidnapping citizens of dozens of nationalities in international waters and even sending 34 to the hospital.

In addition to Thiago, three other Brazilians were among those kidnapped: Mandi Coelho, Leandro Lanfredi, and Thaiane, who were released along with the others two days later, with the exception of the leaders.

These leaders were to serve as an example so that no one else would dare to break the criminal blockade that has lasted more than 17 years and attempt to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza in the face of the imposition of hunger, thirst, lack of medical treatment, and a total lack of living conditions as part of the genocide.

The flotilla exposes the crime against humanity and is a thorn in the side. It exposes international complicity, further evidenced by Greece’s collaboration in the hijacking in waters near that country, within a maritime rescue zone. When intercepted, the activists sent out an SOS over the radios—Greece did not respond; the GSF denounced its collaboration.

It is common knowledge that the flotilla has the power to stir waves of solidarity around the world. It continues to sail, with four other Brazilians on board, at a time when genocide and ethnic cleansing are being normalized.

Sadly, as if the horrors of the genocide scenes were not enough, even aberrations such as Israel’s approval of a law allowing the execution by hanging of Palestinian political prisoners at the end of last March did not fill the streets.

The decline in mobilizations for Palestine is fueled by the silencing and omission of the media in the hands of big capitalists—the same media that tirelessly echoes Zionist propaganda that dehumanizes the Palestinian people and criminalizes their resistance, as well as people in solidarity, such as Thiago Ávila and Saif Abukeshek, whose smear campaign preceded the kidnapping and continues.

The conviction of the national president of the PSTU, Zé Maria, is part of the same process of criminalization and persecution aimed at silencing the voices that rise up for Palestine. But the more they try to silence them, the louder these voices are heard—as the Palestinian people teach us: when one of us falls, ten others rise up.

Regrettably, the political cost of killing and torturing Palestinians is something Israel is willing to pay, because it is worth the price of exporting its technologies of death for repression and genocide, such as against the poor and Black people in Brazil. Crime pays.

Governments around the world endorse this, and it must stop. The flotilla is a powerful indictment in this regard. For 20 years, the Palestinian people have been calling for a boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel to internationally isolate the racist and colonial state of Israel. Sanctions, as stated by the United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, Francesca Albanese, are not charity, they are not a favor; they are the bare minimum: a legal obligation. History will hold us accountable.

The Streets are Calling

If, on the one hand, the genocidal state did not want to pay the political cost of keeping Thiago and Saif in prison for 100 years, as was its intention, this was due to the international pressure and mobilization that threatened to rise.

Dockworkers in Italy were already warning of new strikes; students in Europe were once again talking about new encampments; voices for Palestine were rising in the waves stirred by the flotilla, especially due to the delay in releasing its leaders and reports of mistreatment and torture.

The lesson is that we must not stop taking to the streets for Palestine; mobilization and pressure on governments remain essential. The oppressed and exploited must organize. After all, beyond the enormous injustice, the Palestinian cause is the synthesis of their struggles worldwide. On the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, it is urgent to expand and join the mobilizations, from São Paulo and Brazil to Europe and the United States.

Thiago Ávila reinforced this call upon his return at the airport: “Do not be afraid of them; they are the ones who should be afraid of the people. Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu will pay for their crimes. They will be thrown into the trash where they belong; their racist and supremacist ideologies, such as Zionism, and this destructive ideology, such as U.S. imperialism, will be defeated. We will succeed in building a world free from oppression, exploitation, and the destruction of nature. But to do that, we will need to fight hard; we will need to mobilize a great deal.” Saif stated: “We are not heroes; we want people to talk about Palestine.”

What you hear most often when visiting occupied Palestine is: “Tell the world what you saw, because the international community has abandoned us.”

When people from different parts of the world join the flotilla, when someone like Thiago Ávila, a Brazilian, lends his image, space, time, and voice to expose and denounce Zionism’s crimes against humanity—and is willing to pay a price for it, continues to return on new flotillas, still bravely making the “V” sign (the Palestinian symbol meaning “resistance until victory” in the face of the Zionist oppressors)—the Palestinian people feel they are not so alone.

This is expressed in a mural painted in his honor in Gaza, at the vigil for his and Saif’s release on the beaches of that narrow, battered strip, and in expressions of gratitude. The Palestinian people resist and inspire solidarity.

For Thiago, Saif, and all those who refuse to be silenced and accept genocide, the verses of the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish:

“We suffer from an incurable disease called hope. Hope for liberation and independence. Hope for a normal life, in which we will be neither heroes nor victims. Hope to see our children go to school without risk. For a pregnant woman, hope of giving birth to a living baby in a hospital, and not a dead child at a military checkpoint. Hope that our poets will see the beauty of the color red in roses and not in blood. Hope that this land will rediscover its original name: land of love and peace.
