A trip in support of the Cuban people

Last week, I was in Cuba. It is the country of the most celebrated revolution on the continent, a small Caribbean island that stood up to an empire and won not only independence, but also education, healthcare and, for a time, a planned economy geared towards the needs of workers and the Cuban people.

Today, however, Cuba faces the threat of military occupation by Trump. Given the country’s immense historical significance for revolutionaries, and the need to demonstrate solidarity during this period of imperialist aggression, I arrived in Cuba seeking to understand why the revolution no longer exists, why its achievements are being lost, and why the current system is capitalist, exercising tight control over the island’s economy and monitored by a repressive regime.

Day 1: Blackouts and Dialogue with the Trump Administration

I arrived and immediately experienced the ‘full experience’, as the Cubans laughingly refer to it, as they do to their own situation. On the very first day, we experienced the consequences of Trump’s policy preventing the shipment of oil from Venezuela to Cuba. We went more than thirty hours without electricity, water or the internet — a massive blow to a population already living amid severe shortages.

In the late afternoon, while talking to Cubans, we learned of the announcement of trade liberalization measures in dialogue with the United States, opening the door to investment in the energy sector, general infrastructure and even the financial sector.

The Cubans asked us a question: ‘Why, in a single week, do they engage in dialogue with the United States, yet in over 60 years have they been unable to listen to their own people?’

Day 2: Hunger, people reduced to begging in the streets and Latin American inequalities

On the second day, we still had no electricity, but we did have gas. We had brought tapioca starch from Brazil, as well as coffee and spices, to try and cook with. We went out in search of some protein. The only supermarket we could find was an ‘MLC Store’, a shop that sells imported products at exorbitant prices.

In the streets, I saw piles of rubbish and people rummaging through them for food. I watched a woman pick up an egg, only to throw it away when she discovered it was rotten. My heart broke, but at the same time, I felt hatred welling up inside me.

The historical economic blockade imposed on Cuba is to blame, but the main culprit has a name: capitalism. Poverty and hunger are the result of capitalism being restored on the island. By spending eleven times more on tourism than on food, the Cuban government is making its priorities clear, and evidence of this can be found in public documents.

Day 3: The Lack of Democratic Freedoms

Throughout the trip, we were welcomed by young activists who are critical of the regime. They are socialists and radically anti-imperialist. They run a solidarity soup kitchen in a parish and on the streets of Old Havana, a working-class neighborhood. Some of them are former political prisoners who participated in the 11 July 2021 protests, during which they demanded food, medicine, jobs and democratic freedoms.

They were just a few of the more than 1,700 Cubans imprisoned in the days and months following the protests. Nearly 400 remain incarcerated. Among them is Brenda, a young transgender woman with several comorbidities, who is being held in a men’s prison.

The arbitrariness of these imprisonments and the severity of the sentences handed down reveal the regime’s hatred of any form of protest. One of the imprisoned activists told us that these imprisonments have a strong implicit racial and class dimension. Poor people and Black people remain incarcerated, while white people and the middle class face forced exile.

Day 4: The Restoration of Capitalism

Seeing so much suffering, I was reminded of the two main caricatures of Cuba. One comes from the far right, who claim that the country is socialist in order to associate socialism with poverty, hunger and authoritarianism.

Conversely, almost the entire left denies that poverty and authoritarianism exist and idealizes the island, calling it the ‘last bastion of socialism’ and the ‘moral reserve of humanity’. The far right denies that a criminal blockade has been in place for almost seventy years.

Meanwhile, the left denies that capitalism has been restored. In short, both extremes converge in claiming that Cuba is socialist.

Neither side explains why Cuba went from being one of the poorest countries in the world to a country without unemployment, hunger, prostitution, illiteracy or infant mortality, even with the economic blockade and the global economic crisis of the 1970s. Why did it have the best healthcare and education systems in Latin America? And why was it a world leader in sports? The answer is simple: at that time, although fragile, the Cuban economy was not driven by capitalist market logic, but rather planned to meet the needs of its people.

However, from the 1990s onward, the Cuban Communist Party regime ended its monopoly on foreign trade and economic planning and began to privatize state-owned enterprises.

European imperialism returned to the island with a focus on exploiting tourism. Consequently, a bourgeoisie emerged within the party itself and among the regime’s high-ranking officials.

Today, Trump is seeking not only to penetrate the island economically, but also to recolonize it — a plan similar to that in Venezuela.

Day 5: What do Cuban workers want?

I went to Cuba determined to understand the situation and speak to the people. During my time there, I spoke with activists and ordinary Cubans, and toured the neighborhoods of Centro Habana and Old Havana. What I heard and saw bears no resemblance to what the global left says about the Cuban people. The majority of Cubans want two things to end: the economic embargo and the dictatorship.

The desire for democratic freedoms is intense, as is the lack of a left-wing alternative. This is why a large proportion of Cubans, especially the younger generation, identify as right-wing or anti-communist today.

Unfortunately, those who continue to claim that Cuba is socialist may not realize that they are providing free propaganda for the right, since the right asserts the same thing, albeit with different intentions.

In order to foster a new revolutionary consciousness in the country that is both leftist and socialist, it is crucial to listen to and trust the Cuban people, rebuild their identity as a class, and support the formation of unions, movements, and organizations that advocate for dignity, rights, and a fairer society.

Day 6: The Solidarity Flotilla – Donations Welcome, Support for the Regime Rejected

We went to Cuba to show our anti-imperialist solidarity and deliver donations to the ‘Convoy Nuestra América’ flotilla. We delivered the food to a community kitchen and took the medicines to the flotilla’s reception ceremony. We arrived on Monday (the 16th) and the flotilla was scheduled to arrive on Saturday (the 21st).

We spent the entire week looking for information on where the big event with the Cubans would take place, but could not find any.

We asked the local population and nobody knew anything. During the few hours when there was electricity, the television did not announce any rallies against imperialism or to receive donations. This was all very strange, especially given that Cuba was facing imperialist aggression from the United States — the least one would have expected was for the government to call the people out into the streets.

We found out that there was a private event on Friday (the 20th), attended by select guests only. The public were not permitted to attend; only international delegations and the Communist Party of Cuba were present. The following day, another small event took place, once again without the Cuban people. The question remains: who poses the greatest threat to the Cuban regime, Trump or the Cuban people?

Unfortunately, the flotilla was exploited by the regime, and its potential as a demonstration of anti-imperialist strength was lost due to the lack of popular participation.

Day 7: What real help can we offer the Cuban people?

After spending a week in Cuba, I have no doubt about the strength of its people. It is a small island full of life, with an explosive culture and intelligent, critical people who yearn to live with dignity.

What has never existed in Cuba is the regime trusting the strength of the workers. Popular organization, direct democracy and the destiny of Cubans have been gradually stifled. Thinking differently has always been criminalized, as evidenced by the repression and forced labor camps (UMAPs) to which political dissidents, homosexuals, artists and anyone who did not fit into the authoritarian regime were sent.

Standing in solidarity with a people means understanding their aspirations and listening to their demands for justice and basic rights. It is also to present an alternative vision of socialism that is neither authoritarian nor based on scarcity.

Having experienced this first-hand, I am more convinced than ever that our struggle for a sovereign, independent Cuba, free from imperialism, is necessary, but this can only be achieved by trusting in the strength of the Cuban people.

Supporting Cubans now means strengthening their fight against repression, authoritarianism and poverty. This is why we must continue to demand freedom for political prisoners and an end to arbitrary convictions.

Here in Brazil, we must demand that the government sends oil to Cuba and fights for an end to the embargo. We must fight for Cuba’s autonomy in every workplace, school and movement. But we must never hide the truth.

Cuba is not socialist because poverty is not socialism. Socialism is about meeting collective needs. It is not socialist because socialism is workers’ democracy, with active popular participation. It cannot be an authoritarian regime based on privilege.

We must offer our solidarity with the Cuban people, which begins with acknowledging reality and telling the truth.

Last week, I was in Cuba.
