PSTU holds its 9th Congress

Between July 24 and 30, the 9th Congress of the PSTU took place in Jacareí (SP). These were days of intense work, in which discussions and voting were combined with the work in commissions. Along with voting the draft documents, time was dedicated to pass resolutions, part of which were written by delegates during the congress itself.
An expressive international delegation of parties from the International Workers League – Fourth International (IWL–FI) participated, with people from Argentina, Honduras, Italy, Costa Rica, and Colombia. Work started with the debate on the international situation, with emphasis on the Latin-American situation and the Venezuelan crisis.
The debate about the national situation was marked by understanding the nature of the Brazilian crisis, the evaluation of recent workers mobilizations against Temer, and the prospects of continuing the fight against the austerity measures. It was a lively discussion, and it was evident that the delegates had concrete experiences in the organization of the general strike and the building of committees in neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools, with the aim of leading the proletariat and people to seize power. The discussions also showed how the worsening of the capitalist crisis affects the oppressed, the black people, the LGBT people, and women.
One of the most important points was the opening of the debate to update the party’s programme. The profound changes in both international and Brazilian realities since the foundation congress of the party passed its first programme (1994) establish this important challenge. A draft text was assessed and considered a basis to follow with the discussion. It will be published in the Marxism Alive magazine, along with other contributions on the theme.
This congress expressed a lively party, politically strengthened both by its interventions in working-class struggle and by the balance sheet of the struggle to build an independent alternative that does not yield to any of the sectors that try to reedit the former governments of class conciliation led by the PT (Workers Party).
After several months of debate in the branches, the congress is the maximum expression of our democracy, passing the guidelines that will centralize our intervention in the next year and elects a leadership to put them into practice. We came out stronger and more convinced of the need to build a fighting tool against capitalistic barbarism and for the Brazilian and world socialist revolution.
