Morsi was Toppled! Great Victory of the Egyptian People’s Mobilization!

The Egyptian people, carrying on a colossal mobilization, write a new page in the history of their country and their revolution. The irresistible force of 17 million people on the streets was the determining factor for the fall of the government of Mohamed Morsi.

This mobilization, probably the largest in the history of mankind, was a political earthquake that shook the foundations of the military regime that prevails in the country and survived the overthrow of the dictator Mubarak in February 2011.

The Egyptian masses proved their strength in the fall of Mubarak and made an accelerated experience with Morsi, who became president of the country by a pact between the Muslim Brotherhood and the summit of the Armed Forces to preserve the military regime.

A year in office was enough to turn Morsi – who answered none of the popular aspirations after the fall of Mubarak – into a political corpse. The people, done with his government, rose much more strongly than two years ago and overthrew him. We are facing an immense victory of the masses, who see it as such and celebrate in the streets and squares across the country.

It’s a victory because the decisive factor in the defeat of Morsi was a colossal mobilization of the masses. With this fact, the military regime, though not destroyed, was clearly weakened, as the military were forced to sacrifice other government subservient to their interests, the first was Mubarak and now Morsi. They had to do this not by choice, but to try to placate the popular mobilization, which grew at a national level, higher than when Mubarak was toppled, and thus to save their regime.

This is the essential content of fact and process. Therefore, we cannot be deceived by the way the final deposition of Morsi was given: a direct military intervention or political coup of the Army.

They were forced to burn another “fuse” and the status of the system, upon each stroke of the mass movement, is more precarious, however still able to maneuver. First Mubarak, now Morsi who, moreover, is a man of the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization that holds an important role in the country. How many fuses are left for the Egyptian generals and imperialism?

According to the announcement of the commander in chief of the Army and former Minister of Defense of Morsi, General Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, the current head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Masour, will take over as the new president. This character should conduct a “transitional period” before convening new presidential and parliamentary elections. A “roadmap” well known by the Egyptian people and that may be short lived.

This victory is partial and its main contradiction is the fact that the Egyptian masses continue to trust in the military. That is, they do not identify the generals as their main enemy. For the masses, the clear and immediate enemy is still the government (Mubarak, Morsi) and not the Army as an institution, which, moreover, learned to protect itself and break any tie that could sink it with the discredited Morsi.

The new government that emerged within the regime in response to the popular struggle of the masses can’t respond to the legitimate demands and to democratic and economic aspirations of the Egyptian people. It is a subservient government, as Mubarak and Morsi, to the same regime of the generals paid directly by imperialism. So we can’t put any confidence in it, which deserves the direct opposition of the people and the labor movement, the youth and the Egyptian people.

The great task of revolutionaries at this point is to explain patiently to the Egyptian masses that this is not their government, which is part of the same current regime and that they must remain mobilized against their plans.

The struggle must go on!

The new government is, in addition, much weaker than the previous one, creating better conditions to continue the struggle, not only against it but also against the whole regime.

The task now is – backed by the great achievement represented by the fall of Morsi – maintain the mobilization to achieve full democratic freedoms, to punish not only Mubarak’s crimes, but of all the military leadership, to confiscate their wealth and properties and revoke all agreements they have with imperialism.

In this sense, it is time to demand the immediate break the Treaty of Camp David and the end of all financial and political subordination of the Army to imperialism and Israel! Against the new debt of $ 4.8 billion with Washington bankers! No to the payment of the foreign debt, so that these resources can be invested in jobs, health and education for the Egyptian people!

We must also fight for: General wage increase! For an emergency economic plan and the immediate reduction in working hours without loss of pay, to guarantee jobs for all! For the expropriation of large national and multinational companies and the financial system!

In this context, it is necessary to maintain the independence of workers and popular organizations, and in the heat of battle, move forward to build a revolutionary and internationalist party that can lead the mobilization until the destruction of the military regime, in order to advance the only fundamental solution: a workers and popular government in Egypt.

Long live the Egyptian revolution!
