“The Italian comrades’ decision is historic”

Following our last week report on the issue, on January 5th and 7th January, the founding congress of a new Italian party was held in Rimini city, summoned by PC-Rol (Communist Project – Re-found the Opposition of the Workers). With representatives coming from different parts of the country and an atmosphere of great emotion and excitement, the congress adopted, among other resolutions, two historic statements. The foundation of a revolutionary party declaring to be of Marxist, Leninist and Trotskyist tradition, the name of which is PdAC (Party of Communist Alternative) and a request of admission of this party to the IWL-FI, pointing out clearly that it is born within the best revolutionary tradition, that of the proletarian internationalism. Please read the interview to Zé Maria, chairman of the PSTU, who accompanied the congress.

What is your impression of this congress and its importance?

Zé María – It was a historic congress and its importance is not limited to the political situation in Italy. It spawned a new revolutionary organisation in the country, integrated into a project of construction of an International. This fact in itself has great importance, for it is a rare component nowadays, even among sectors that claim to be Trotskyists. I wish to highlight particularly the importance that was attached to the fact that the new party was being built within the framework of an International, strengthening the construction of a revolutionary international to retrieve the traditions of the IV International.

Secondly, the excitement, the joy among the cadres and militants attending the congress was evident and contagious and stemmed out of the decision to found a revolutionary party that will try and build itself intervening directly in class struggle. The militant experience of most of the comrades has so far been in a reformist organisation (Party of Communist Re-foundation). All this, together with the political situation in Italy with a Popular Front administration  headed by Social Democracy (former Communist Party of Italy) show good chances for the growth of this party.

What is the current situation of the party?

Zé Maria: This party is born with an important contingent considering the nature of our parties in the current political situation. It has militants intervening in various sectors (metallurgic, teachers, dockers, youth, air workers, etc.) They are also beginning work with a great potential together with immigrant workers. Their militants are present in various regions of Italy, not only in Rome.

How important are the events for PSTU and IWL-FI?

Zé Maria : At present IWL-FI is discussing precisely that but in my opinion (an I believe it to be also the opinion of the leadership of the International) that the importance of what happened in Italy is immense for the project we are building. In a nutshell: once the affiliation PdAC to the IWL-FI is formalised – something that should take place during our next International Executive Committee in a few months’ time , this party may become our biggest party in Europe.

The affiliation to the IWL-FI  will echo all over the world, in other groupings, increasing our capacity of attraction and agglutination. The decision of the Italian revolutionaries is historic for the headway towards the reconstruction of the Fourth International as part of the scope we have been defining during these last years.

For our party the importance of the events in Italy is also great. Firstly because if the IWL is stronger, our party will also be stronger for we exist only as part of this international project. And it contributes directly towards the growth of our party inasmuch as we can receive the experience of the comrades to improve our own activity in Brazil as well. As part of the address I delivered to the Congress, I invited the comrades to send cadres to our country for several months to get acquainted with our work and that of the IEL-FI. In this way they will be able to express opinions on our policies as from their experience in Italy and see how our experience can be made good use of for their work there. It would also help to build a coexistence inside the IWL-FI.
