For an immediate reincorporation of Orlando Chirino

Venezuelan trade Union leader, Orlando Chirino has recently been dismissed from PDVSA, the state-owned oil company. This fact represents a new attack of Hugo Chavez against the trade union autonomy of Venezuelan workers and all those who may have opposed his policy.

An intense national and international campaign in Solidarity with Chirino is being carried out repudiating his dismissal and demanding his reincorporation to PDVSA. IWL-FI has joined this campaign and, apart from giving it an impulse, calls on all the workers’ organisations and left organisation to sign the petition that has been launched.

On February 8th, the IWL-FI emitted a statement that, among other concepts, declared, “We wish to express our broadest solidarity to comrade Orlando Chirino and to repudiate this dismissal. At the same time we demand form the Venezuelan government and the authorities of the PDVSA his immediate reincorporation and call all the organisations to develop the campaign that is already underway”.

The test of the petition that is being used in this campaign is as follows:

Engineer Rafael Ramirez (minister of Energy and Oil)

President of Petroleos de Venezuela and remaining members of the board of directors of PDVSA

We, the signers of this document wish to request immediate reintegration of Orlando Chirino, national coordinator of National Union of Workers (UNT), who had and outstanding performance against the coup of April 2002 and in defence of the oil industry in the days of lock-out sabotage against PDVSA during that same year.

Chirino has been dismissed from PDVSA in the most unjustified manner for he is under legal protection of Organic Bill of Labour for the trade union dispensation due to the fact that he is a member of the leadership of Sinutrapetrol (Oil workers trade union) in the position of secretary of security and Hygiene and, additionally, he is national coordinator of the UNT.

Our request is justified by all above mentioned as well as by his spotless over three decade background in the service of the interests of the Venezuelan working class acknowledged by thousands of workers, regardless his political or ideological positions.

Send your statements to solidaridadconchirino@yahoo.com.ar with copy to litci@terra.com.br giving details of the organisation you belong to and – if appropriate – the position in the trade union, political or students’ organisation.
