They have been fighting back Tia Maria mining project for ten years.
On August 9, 2019 President Martin Viscarra had to suspend the license he granted one month before for Mexican-Canadian Southern Copper Mining Company.
Southern Copper planned to take 120,000 tons of copper per year from Tia Maria in Islay city near Arequipa.
Peasants and locals oppose it as theirs lands and water resources would be devasted.
On August 5, 2019 there was a general strike across Arequipa region against Tia Maria mining project.
They manage to stop Matarani harbor from operating for Tia Maria.
Nevertheless, the war is not over.
