Land Reform in Brazil: Slowly Grinding to a Halt

President Dilma Rousseff´s policies maintain growth in agribusiness while murders of rural workers increase.

On April 17th, 1996, 19 rural workers of the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) were killed in the so called Eldorado dos Carajás massacre (Pará). On this day, 17 years ago, the Military Police, under the command of governor Almir Gabriel (PSDB, a conservative, right-wing party), clashed a march for land reform with gun shots. 154 policemen have been reported by the public minister, but only 2 were convicted. The ex-Governor Almir Gabriel died without being held accountable for his crimes.

The Workers’ Social Security is at Risk

A new Social Security reform has been inserted on the government agenda, this time together with the factor 85/95 and the minimum age.

After being overlooked and left on the sidelines for some time, the Social Security Pension System is coming back to the crosshairs of the government and businessmen. Although several measures have been inserted on the agenda, the objectives follow the same logic: to reduce the Social Security "expenses" in order to divert more funds to pay the debt interest and boost the billionaire market of private retirement plans.

Strike in Belo Monte Discloses the Dictatorial Face of Dilma’s Government

Councilor of PSTU in Belém, Cleber Rabelo, goes to Altamira to stand in solidarity with the hydroelectric plant’s workers.

Three workers were arrested by the police and three are missing since the early hours of Wednesday (April 10th) in Belo Monte. So far no one knows the whereabouts of these workers who were at the forefront of the strike on the Sitio Pimental, main construction site of the Power Plant. "What we knowis that thousands of workers are trying to get out of there, besieged by the Military Police officers and by the National Security Force. A truly absurd!”, denounced Atnágoras Lopes, of the National Executive of the CSP-Conlutas[1] and who is in Altamira (PA) providing solidarity to the workers.
