December 18, 2013 was memorable for thousands of teachers: driven by their rank and file actions and combativeness, they were able to, in dozens of schools, boycott the infamous Examination for Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (PACC) that the Minister Nuno Crato wants, at this stage, to impose to contract teachers as a further step to their dismissal and subsequent creation of a reserve army labor in teaching.

On March, 3 the Movement of Socialist Alternative (MAS), Portuguese section of the IWL-FI, saw its registration as a party denied by the Constitutional Court (TC), after delivering 9259 signatures, two thousands more than what was demanded by legislation. Several voices - as Antonio Marinho Pinto and Daniel Oliveira - denounced in the press this attempt at silencing a new left alternative.

Antonio Marinho e Pinto, Chairman of the Bar Association (the organization that represents the professional group of lawyers), in an Opinion article in the Jornal de Notícias of Portugal (March 11, 2013, "Guardian of the party system"), criticizes the refusal of registration of the MAS as a political party by the Constitutional Court claiming that "with decisions like this, the TC pays a bad service to democracy and the rule of law, although very useful to existing parties."

The MAS (Movimento Alternativa Socialista – Socialist Alternative Movement) is a new party founded in Portugal in March 2012. Once it appeared it immediately implemented the necessary procedures to achieve its legalization, in accordance with the legislation of its country.

At a festive rally, attended by over 300 people, the foundation of Alternative Socialist Movement (MAS) was announced. It stems out of members of the Left Block to which the trend Ruptura/Fer used to belong. The rally was held on Saturday 10 March in the Worker’s Voice in Lisbon.
